Reinhardt Lincke knows she’s dying.
She’s spent years planning, quietly amassing an army and followers to lead an insurrection against the throne to avenge her dear father’s death. But it was all for naught—and with her last breath she makes a desperate wish, a plea for another chance at retribution.
She awakens and sees her father’s casket. She’s at his funeral, fifteen years prior. Right before Crown Prince Michel will arrive and demand their divorce. She doesn’t know if this is a final gift from her father’s spirit, but she won’t allow this blessing to go to waste. Armed with fifteen years of resentment and her father’s beloved sword, stabbing Michel is as sweet as she could have hoped, but maiming an imperial prince has its consequences.
Michel survives, sparing Reinhardt from execution, but she is stripped of her wealth and titles and exiled to the far north, where she will have to begin her scheming anew. Except, another gift presents itself on her journey north: a boy, half-starved and feral—a seemingly paltry offering. Only, Reinhardt knows better. The wild boy would go on to become Michel’s coveted champion knight, ruthless and unmatched. But, this time, she’s found him first.
The only revenge sweeter than crippling a prince is stealing his prized hound. But Reinhardt learns that showing a mad dog kindness means he's yours for life, and her new knight will do anything to make her his in return.
