Darwyn's Cooke take on Batman is one of the most nuanced and interesting of that character. Ego may lack the action present on other heavy hitter titles like Dark Knight Returns, but it helps to re-define the myth of Batman. If according to Grant Morrison's "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth", Bruce is the mask that Batman uses when he's not fighting crime, Cooke's version of the character states that the Batman persona was born before Crime Alley and that it co-exists with Bruce. The mature themes of the book mixed with the espectacular art should have made this an instant classic, but somehow it doesn't get all the love it deserves.
