En el año 2001, Batman luchó contra Ra's al Ghul para salvar al mundo de un virus. Lo logró pero terminó lisiado. Angustiado por las heridas, declaró que Batman está muerto. Durante semanas, el crimen se disparó cuando la mafia se apoderó de Gotham City. Incluso lograron que el comisionado Gordon se retirara. Tim Drake se dio cuenta de que Gotham necesitaba un Batman, así que se puso la capucha.
