Plot
Tenshi no Tamago is an animated film with original concept, screenplay, and direction by Mamoru Oshii ("Ghost in the Shell") and original concept and art direction by Yoshitaka Amano ("Final Fantasy" series). The definitive book "The Art of Tenshi no Tamago", which compiles original illustrations, filmmaking materials, and image boards that distill its world, was first published in 1986, revised and expanded in 2004, and returns in a long-awaited reissue.
The OVA "Tenshi no Tamago", released in 1985, is a legendary work in which visionary director Mamoru Oshii, known for redefining the boundaries of anime and cinema with titles such as "Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer", "Ghost in the Shell", and "Innocence", collaborated with Yoshitaka Amano, who later became an internationally renowned illustrator, to depict a fantastical otherworld. Nearly monochrome colors, minimal dialogue, unusually long takes, and approximately 400 cuts - about one third of a typical animated work - define its ascetic style and illuminate the theme of doubt toward one's own existence that runs through Oshii's films. For Oshii, it stands as his first original film and an important starting point as an auteur.
Marking its 40th anniversary in 2025, a 4K remaster of "Tenshi no Tamago" drew worldwide attention, with its world premiere selected for Cannes Classics and additional festival presentations including Annecy, prompting renewed critical appraisal four decades after its debut.
