El camino de Batman hacia la fantasía es mucho más precoz que el de Superman, y ya desde el primer tomo, empezamos a ver personajes extravagantes como El Joker, Clayface o Catwoman, artilugios como el Batplane y el Batgyro, y el ayudante pre-adolescente, el añadido más cuestionable para un héroe supuestamente nocturno y que quiere inspirar terror en los maleantes. Sin el aspecto histórico-social que tienen los primeros números de Superman, los cómics de Batman de los años 1939-1941 han envejecido peor, pues simplemente son historias de entretenimiento con el estilo narrativo y gráfico de hace 85 años, algunas bastante duras de leer hoy en día.
