Plot

This book serves both as a resource that unravels the structure of the animation “STEAMBOY” and as an alternative version of the “STEAMBOY” main story, presented in print. This is the second volume of a two-part collection compiling the vast number of storyboards created by Otomo himself for this work, which took ten years to produce from planning to release.

Released in theaters in 2004, the film “STEAMBOY” was an original full-length anime by Katsuhiro Otomo—his first since “AKIRA,” for which he served as original creator, screenwriter, and director.

At the time of the film’s release, the Young Magazine editorial department published a single-volume “STEAMBOY Storyboard Collection,” which later became a rare collector’s item. This new edition splits the original into two volumes, enlarging the format from A5 size to match the dimensions of the Otomo Complete Works. This volume covers the second half of the film—Parts D, E1, and E2—and includes additional content such as alternate versions, pilot film storyboards, and approximately 60 pages of previously unreleased storyboard roughs. With nearly 500 pages, this is another substantial volume. A newly written commentary by the author is included at the end.

The title “Storyboards” refers to the English term for “e-konte”.
